Skies, Then and Now
Irony found
in this fact:
I grew up in the Prairies
from Alberta
to Manitoba.
And so rarely
would I look up
at the skies
and the stars.
Despite watching
Adama and Kirk,
Rogers and Koenig,
I would not look
up at the skies
where, so the TV said,
their adventures
and trials played out.
Now, in Ottawa,
despite tales in the news
of light pollution
masking the skies,
I look up and see
at last, at long last,
Dubhe and Bellatrix,
Polaris and Rigel.
And still,
I do not quite
understand
what it is I see
at night, when
the skies are clear...
or at least...
clear enough.

A bit of catch-up

Went to see this...well, because I'm a fan and I used to do some courtroom art for the news arm of the Corporation on a freelance basis years ago. Looks like I wasn't the only one with that idea.

Nate's: In Memoriam
This used to be a Culinary Fixture in Ottawa. For many years, renowned for its food and a major hangout for celebrities, politicians, and more...the building on Rideau Street was sold and, eventually demolished.
We've been told that the owners might find some way to revive the brand somewhere else in the city. No word on where or when just yet as of February 2011.

Hazeldean: Hewitt Way, Old-School
"What Canadian hockey fan alive during the last half-century or more is not going to twig to this one?"
That's what I wrote when I first uploaded this to Flickr awhile back in the fall of 2010. I was researching one of the articles on Ottawa street names that have been showing up at spacingottawa.ca under my byline from time to time, and when I saw this name on the map...well, things kept clicking.
It was almost certainly named for Foster Hewitt, the CBC sportscaster whose name and voice are synonymous for at least two generations' worth of Canadian hockey viewers and listeners by way of Hockey Night in Canada.
I wish I could recall listening to him when he was on the job, although I do recall seeing the 1972 summit series between Teams Canada and USSR as a child, which he came out of retirement specifically to cover.

Toronto Broadcast Centre on a Saturday II
This was back in August of 2009. I was in Toronto to play tourist without any cares for any convention of any sort. Just wanted to see some sights and do some shopping for the heck of it.
So I dropped in on the CBC Toronto Broadcast Centre as part of the self-guided tour.
I got lucky. Everyone but the camera crew and the souvenir shop was gone for the moment.
